What’s Scrap Gardening?

Stuck with tons of vegetable scraps in the kitchen? Want a fun garden activity to share with the whole family? At Terreplenish, we’re all about reducing waste, so we’ve been loving the rise in scrap gardening – before you throw away or compost your leftover vegetable scraps, consider cultivating these for some whole new produce!
Herbs
Try stripping the leaves from ¾ of some basil, cilantro, or rosemary stems and place them in a jar of water. Just leave them in indirect sunlight, change the water every other day, and when the roots grow 2 inches, you can optionally plant them in soil for the long haul!
Avocados
Maybe you’ve tried this one before – using some toothpicks and a cup of water to hang an avocado pit halfway into some water – but you might also know that they take forever to grow. Add Terreplenish to the water to see faster results – it’s not just for soil!
Celery
If you’re left with a celery base after cooking, just place it upright in a bowl of water. Leave in indirect sunlight, change the water every other day, and after 5-7 days, plant the base in some soil up to the leaf tips.
Leeks, Green Onions, Scallions
Any vegetables with the roots still intact can be placed in some water and soon, you’ll start to see fresh greens grow from the base!
Mushrooms
These are super easy – just take off the mushroom caps and plant the stalks in soil, covering everything but the top of the stem.
Pineapples
Twist off the top of a pineapple and peel back the leaves at the base to expose the bottom layers. Then cut off a layer off the base and poke 3 or 4 toothpicks into the base, suspending it above a bowl of water. Watch the roots form, and then plant the top in soil!
Lettuce
Put the base of some romaine hearts in a bowl of shallow water, keep it sunny but cool, and once it sprouts, plant the hearts in some soil.
PRO TIP: Use Terreplenish for any of your scrap gardening projects, regardless of whether it’s in the soil or still in water. Terreplenish speeds up growth, helps control airborne pathogens, and keeps your soil and water cleaner for longer – so you don’t have to change it as often!
With so many people taking up gardening, garden centers are running out of supplies, so
don’t waste time chasing down seeds – start your own scrap garden today!
